Hardie first approached Led Zeppelin’s guitarist, Jimmy Page, with an idea for a design involving the airship icon. Jimmy then asked him to refer directly to a photograph that he had found showing the Hindenburg disaster and the design for Led Zeppelin I was born. What a design it is. The Dark Side of the Moon silkscreen print was produced in an edition of 295 by the Hipgnosis founding team of Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell. The idea to revisit album cover artwork for publication as original, limited edition prints came from Storm Thorgerson in 2000. He had amassed a huge body of work from forty years of creating iconic covers and wanted it to be seen in fuller glory. Storm and his Hipgnosis partner Aubrey Powell (Po) worked towards producing prints from twelve Pink Floyd covers and The Dark Side of the Moon was obviously a prime candidate for inclusion. Arguably one of the best known album covers in the world, it was ideal for silkscreen with its flat black background and vibrant spectrum of colours. George Hardie did the illustration, back in 1973, when he was working with the Hipgnosis studio on the original cover design. Storm Thorgerson recalled, "the design is simply a mechanical tint lay, which means we drew outline shapes, black on white, and indicated what colours were to appear when printed. The prisms were airbrushed black on white and reversed by the printer. The idea itself was cunningly cobbled from a standard physics textbook, which illustrated light passing through a prism. Of significance was the simple, elegant layout against black - standard textbook illustrations did not do this. And then to connect this idea to their live show, which was famous for its lighting, and subsequently to connect this to ambition and madness, themes Roger was exploring in the lyrics; hence the prism, the triangle and the pyramids. It all connects, somehow, somewhere". The Dark Side of the Moon was Pink Floyd's commercial-meets-conceptual equinox, of which David Gilmour says "We knew that the package; the record and the cover and everything together; was going to be far, far stronger than anything we had done before." The silkscreen edition was printed in 12 colours on Somerset paper by the esteemed Coriander Studios, London, UK.
