Alan Aldridge

Alan Aldridge (1938 – 2017)

A celebrated English graphic designer, artist and illustrator. He left school at the age of fourteen to work for Banana Wharf in London unloading the cargo boats. H e did a stint as an insurance clerk, working on Stratford Market as a barrow boy, a chicken plucker at a Halal butcher s hop and a scene painter . He never acquired any formal art education, but began to draw portraits around the pubs of Soho in 1963. His first job as an illustrator was offered to him by The Sunday Times Magazine . In 1965 he became an art director at Pengui n Books, specialising in science fiction book covers. In 1968, he established his own graphic designing studio INK. H e became friendly with the Beatles and edited and contributed illustration to the Beatles Illustrated Lyrics book , including Yellow Submari ne, Nowhere Man and A Hard Day ’ s Night. Aldridge was appointed “ His Royal Master of Images to their Majesties the Beatles ” by John Lennon. In 1975 he designed the cover for Elton John ’ s album Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy . He also designed the famous Hard Rock Café logo.
